Once in a Lifetime Picture
Once in a Lifetime Picture
Naomi labeled this "once in a lifetime" picture of the older generations of women in her family. Seated on the couch are three women with a baby in the middle, presumably Naomi.
On the back, she documented the remarkable and sometimes tragic history of each:
Cora Lee Burton – Naomi’s great-grandmother on Polly’s side.
Edie Mae "Burton" Oliver – Naomi’s grandmother, rumored to have killed her husband, Howard (Naomi's grandfather), before slipping out of town with her lover.
Matilda "Tully" Oliver – Married David Oliver, who later hung himself. Their two sons, Howard (Naomi’s grandfather) and Norman, managed to escape.
This photograph is a testament to the strong, complex women whose stories, whether spoken or unspoken, helped shape Naomi's outlook and life.
